From here we can already see Macapá, because we’ve just entered the bay. It is thrilling to watch our city approach after 20-odd days navigating through river labyrinths in this extraordinary planet called the Amazon. From Belém, the boat has taken more than 40 hours to transport the permanent staff of Navegar Amazônia. Macapá is right opposite us: “Por mais distante / O errante navegante / quem jamais te esqueceria…*”. From the sea-river, like in Caetano’s song, we yell “Land ahoy!”. Zé Miguel, who produces the show Pérola do Norte (Marco Zero TV – SBT – Channel 13) gathers Navegar Amazônia’s staff for a group interview, to accumulate impressions about the Expedition Belém-Abaetetuba, that will end in a couple of minutes with our arrival. The TV show Pérola do Norte should be aired next Sunday, transmitting our interview. I conclude now the reports of this long and thrilling odyssey in the tropical forests, trustful that others are to come, because navigating… is mandatory!
When Pero Vaz de Caminha realized Brazilian soil was rich and desirable, he wrote a letter to the king of Portugal: “Everything planted here grows and flourishes…”.
Save the forest! The forest of the poets who turn Navegar Amazônia –as Mautner mentioned- into the concrete poetry. The criticism, baby, doesn’t dare to interfere in poetry issues…
* “The most distant / Errant navigator/ who would never forget you…”. These verses belong to Caetano Velloso’s song Terra (Earth).
